Albert and Nancy Boggess met and received their Ph.D.'s in Astronomy at the University of Michigan.  Both worked for NASA and have since retired to Boulder, Colorado.  Their areas of expertise define the limits of visible light, since Al's area of study is in the ultraviolet while Nancy's is in the infrared!

In 1983 Al was appointed associate director of science for the Space Telescope Sciences Directorate.

Nancy was Senior Staff Scientist responsible for NASA's infrared astronomy program which led to the Kuiper airborn observatory and the IRAS satellite to study the universe in infrared light.  She was also Deputy Project Scientist for the Cosmic Background Explorer satellite (COBE).  COBE's measurements of the cosmic background radiation from the "Big Bang" confirmed theories of the origin of the universe.
