Sacher Hotel Cafe
The photo above is of the coffee-house of the Sacher Hotel where I ate the obligatory Sacher-torte with a cup of hot Viennese coffee. The hotel is one
of Vienna's most aristocratic lodgings dating back to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Sacher distinguishes itself with ornate rococo decor,
a restaurant that is the social hub of the Viennese elite and the old-world coffee-house that
created the rich chocolate cake called the Sacher Torte.

Sacher Hotel, Vienna
The hotel is situated directly behind the Vienna State Opera, in the heart of the city.  It was built in 1876 by Eduard Sacher, son of the inventor of the original Sacher Torte.  It soon became the meeting place of Austrian nobility, performers and business men. The variously sized rooms are individually decorated with paintings by old masters, stuccoed ceilings and valuable carpets.

Vienna State Opera House
The opera house was the first major building on the Vienna Ringstrasse commissioned by the Viennese "city expansion fund". Work commenced on
the house in 1861 and was completed in 1869, following plans drawn up by architects August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll.  It
was built in the Neo-Renaissance style by the renowned Czech architect and contractor Josef Hlávka.
