Village of Oia on the island of Santorini (Thira), Greece
Santorini is what remains of an enormous volcanic explosion 3,500 years ago in the southern Aegean Sea (part of the Mediterranean Sea) southeast of the Greek mainland.  A giant central lagoon (8 X 4 miles) is surrounded by 300 m (984 ft) high steep cliffs on three sides. On the fourth side, the lagoon is separated from the sea by another smaller island called Therasia.  Santorini's capital, Fira, clings to the top of the cliff looking down on the lagoon.  Its spectacular physical beauty have made it one of Greece's most visited islands.
