Pantheon in Rome
The Pantheon commissioned by
Marcus Agrippa as a temple to "all the gods" of Ancient Rome was
rebuilt by Emperor Hadrian in about 126 AD. The building is circular
with a portico of granite Corinthian columns. A rectangular vestibule
links the porch to the coffered concrete dome with a central opening to
the sky called the
oculus.
The interior height of the dome and the diameter of the interior circle
are the same, 142 feet. It is one of the best preserved of all Roman
buildings. The square in front of the Pantheon is called Piazza della
Rotonda.
