This famous sculpture depicts the body of Jesus on the lap of his mother
Mary after the Crucifixion. The theme is of Northern European origin,
popular by that time in France. A similar scene can be seen in
stained glass at the Basilica of Notre Dame de Fourviere in Lyon
France.
