The Matterhorn (Italian: Monte Cervino) peak has an elevation of 14,700 ft (4,480 m).  It is located in the Pennine Alps near the Swiss town of Zermatt, close to the Italian-Swiss border.  Its distinctive pyramidal peak was formed by the enlargement of several cirques.  It was first scaled in 1865 by Edward Whymper,
an English mountaineer.
