The first medical school building was built in 1850.  It measured 92 by 42 feet, contained three stories, and prominently featured an eastern portico with four tall Greek columns of brick and stucco.  It contained both laboratory and lecture space and served as the center of medical instruction at the
University of Michigan for fifty years. A 4-story addition at the rear of the original 3-story building was added in 1864 and was used until 1903 when the new West Medical was completed.  A fire in 1911 destroyed part of the building and it was razed in 1914.
