The Gloriette is an observation platform at the very top of a hill on
the grounds of Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna. It is set behind the
palace's beautiful Baroque park with its enormous formal flower beds,
arbors, statuary, and fountains. Here too you will find Tierpark
and the
oldest zoo in
the world (built in 1752 by Maria Theresa for her husband, Franz Stephan).
The Gloriette was built by Ferdinand von Hohenberg. This triumphal arch
with colonnade, celebrated the victories of Maria-Theresa over the
Prussians of Frederic the Great.
