The photo above is of the coffee-house of the Sacher Hotel where I ate
the obligatory Sacher-torte with a cup of hot Viennese coffee. The hotel
is one of Vienna's most aristocratic lodgings dating back to the
Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Sacher distinguishes itself with ornate
rococo decor,
a restaurant that is the social hub of the Viennese elite and the old-world coffee-house that created the rich chocolate cake called the Sacher Torte.
The hotel is situated directly behind the Vienna State Opera, in the
heart of the city. It was built in 1876 by Eduard Sacher, son of the
inventor of the Original Sachertorte and it soon became the meeting
place of Austrian nobility, performers and business magnates. The
variously sized rooms are individually decorated with paintings by old
masters, stuccoed ceilings and valuable carpets. In these exclusive
settings you are offered modern comfort of a luxury hotel in an
incomparable ambience.
