Situated in western Austria, the Tyrol is at the heart of the country's Alpine region.  It is the
most mountainous region of all, with forests, alpine pastures, beautiful valleys and mountain lakes. Traditional Tirolean architecture is reflected in its villages, churches and castles.  In summer it is a popular destination for hikes, while in winter it is a skier's delight.
The Tirolean capital and twice home of the Winter Olympics is Innsbruck.  An 800-year-old university town, it has numerous fine buildings dating from Austria's cultural Renaissance in the 16th-18th centuries, and a 12th-century castle.
