Mortuary temple wall painting of the god Anubis in the Valley of the Kings near Luxor.
.
He is a god with a jackal's head, and this fact seems to prove that in primitive times he was merely the god associated with the dead because the jackal was generally seen prowling about the tombs.
Anubis was the patron of embalming. He was also the keeper of poisons and medicines. He provided unguents and rare herbs to help Isis and Nephthys with the embalming of Osiris. Anubis then performed the funeral of Osiris, which would be the model for all funerals to come.
