The use of a horse drawn carriages is a popular way to tour the resort town of Luxor. In ancient times this was the holy city of Thebes. Located on east bank of the Nile River in Upper Egypt (400 miles south of Cairo) it was the center of religion in the Middle and New Kingdom periods of Egypt. The city of the living was on the east bank (sun rises) of the Nile where the Temples of Luxor and Karnak were found. On the west bank of the Nile (where the sun sets) was the city of the dead where the royal tombs were located. These tombs were in the Valleys of the Kings, Queens and Nobles. The buildings in this area were constructed between the XIII to XXX Dynasties (circa 1786 - 332 BC).
