July 23, 2005 luncheon at the Westward Look Resort near Tucson, Arizona kicked-off the ceremonies for a celebration of the casting of first of seven 8.4 mirrors for the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT).  The attendees were staff and guests from the 8 contributing institutions:  Carnegie Institution (parent), Harvard University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, University of Arizona, University of Michigan, MIT, University of Texas and Texas A&M.  Writers from Science, Nature, Scientific American and the New York Times also attended.
