Agathla Peak
This striking landmark (also named El Capitan by Kit Carson) just south of Monument Valley rises 1500
feet above the floor of Little Capitan Valley. Agathla (Navajo for "the place of the animal hides") is a
remnant core of an ancient volcano and unlike most of the surrounding red sandstone formations is made
of igneous rock.
