Orion's M42 and NGC1977
Located in the "sword" of the Orion constellation is the Great Orion Nebula (M42- the pink nebula on the right) and the fainter blue reflection nebula NGC 1977 ("the running man") to its north (on the left).  M42 is an emission nebula where active star formation is taking place.  The brightest portion of the nebula is the Trapezium --  the yellow area near its base.

Photographic data: I used an Astro-Physics 155 mm f/7 EDF refractor, Nikon F2 camera and Kodak Pro 400 PPF film.  The image is a composite of three 45 minute exposures.
